Chocolate was imported both as raw cacao beans and processed “cakes”, which were shaved and mixed with heated milk, then put in a chocolate pot, along with spices such as aniseed and nutmeg. In the pot a “molinet”, or stirring paddle, was used to mix the drink. A drink of the middle and upper class, chocolate was served at home and in coffee houses.
