In 1726 a two story “Maison a Machicoulis” was constructed on the original site of Fort Conti. It was called” House of Peace” and used as a trading post between the French and the Iroquois. The fort was expanded in 1755 as tension grew between the French and the British, and fell into British hands by 1759, ending the good relations with the Iroquois near the falls.
