Artillery was considered an elite branch of the service in the 18th Century. Batteries (typically a group of 3 or more cannon) were expected to be able to accurately engage the enemy hundreds of yards away, which required knowledge of geometry, mathematics, and the ability to read. Cannons could fire a variety of projectiles, ranging from solid shot (a cannon ball) to grapeshot (a package of smaller balls that disburse like shot from a shotgun).
