Osbourne Hill

Original Oil-30"x40" price upon request

By the time General Howe's army reached Osborne Hill, the column of thousands of British and German soldiers had been marching for 8 hours, dragging cannon and wagons and covered 12 miles. They had crossed the Brandywine twice at the forks and were overheated and exhausted. In need of food and water, Cornwallis halted the army for a much needed rest. The writings of local Quaker Joseph Townsend described Cornwallis as "tall and erect, his rich scarlet clothing was loaded with gold lace and epaulettes which occasioned him to make a brilliant appearance. ".
