In the 18th Century armies would
go into “winter quarters”; maneuvering
in the harsh environment could cause more casualties
than a battle. Nonetheless, a watchful eye had
to be kept toward the enemy. In Washington’s
army most soldiers were without proper clothing
and supplies; Private Joseph Martin claimed the
blanket he had been issued “ was so thin
that a straw could be shot through it without
discommoding the threads”. Yet, the Continental
soldiers persevered.
