Leading his unit,
the 3rd SC Regiment, Thomson was given the task
to command all of the combined forces on the North
tip of Sullivans Island in June of 1776. It was
here that the 780 men and two artillery pieces
successfully defended the Breach Inlet, in turn
defending Fort Moultrie from assault by British
infantry units on the unfinished landward side
of the walls.
