"Night Retreat"

Twice during the American Revolution General George Washington ordered the Continental Army to retreat under the cover of darkness, leaving behind a thin guard of soldiers to tend the watch fires and create the illusion of an entire army. Both times, once in New York and once in New Jersey, the ruse was a success, the British Army falling upon abandoned positions the next mornings.
