"Ned Hector"

Attached to Proctor's artillery, Ned Hector was a free black man listed on the muster roles as a Bombadier in the 3rd Pensylvania Artillery. He served as a wagoner, and was in charge odf a team of horses and a wagon for munitions and suoolies. When his position was about to be overrun, he was to to "abandon your wagon to the enemy and save yourself by flight". Ned was said to have replied, " The enemy shall not have my team...I shall save my horses and myself. " While he withdrew, he calmly collected much needed abandonded arms and munitions, and safely retired from the field.
