The lead elements of Braddock's troops were Grenadiers from the 44th Regt. They were hard pressed when the engagement started, but their targets were clear. Unfortunatley for these brave troops not only were they facing Native forces on three sides, they suffered greatly from fratricide, for other English troops to their rear were firing upon them due to smoke, panic and confusion.
