After being forced across the
Brandywine by overwhelming forces, General William
Maxwell's Light Infantry did not stop to maintain
a defensive posture. The river was another fallback
point for the Continental forces; small units
crossed back onto the British held eastern bank,
probing for an area to assault in strength later
in the day. General Maxwell's Light Infantry was
a composite force of 100 men from each battalion,
formed to move quickly, reconoiter, and strike
fast.
