Much maligned by the Continental forces in the American Revolution, the Hessians were troops that were “rented” from various Germanic principalities. These men were not really mercenaries, as the pay for their service in the “soldier trade” went to their Princes. Though all were labeled as Hessians, many came from areas other than Hesse- Kassel, such as Anspach- Bayreuth, Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Anhalt-Zerbst and Waldeck.
