"Action at the Chadd House"

Original Oil 18"x24"-price on request

The widow Chadd's house was near the center of the Continental defensive line on what became the left flank. Above and behind the house was a battery of Proctor's Artillery, who spent the morning trading shots with the British artillery located on the elevation across the Brandywine, near where the elementary school is today. Jacob Nagle was attached to this battery and made an observation of a rifleman below his position in the buckwheat fields, "On the edge of a wood next to the road was some trees cut down and the Hessions got amongst them; this riffleman fired 7 or 8 shots as fast as they came there. The buckwheat being in bloom they could not see him, but we ware on the highth over him. At length finding no more coming, he crawled on his hands and knees to the fence where he fell in with 6 more." Nagle noted his firing position, " I took notice of one laying on his back to lead his gun". This steady position allowed the rifleman to trade shots with the Jaegers across the river at distances between 100 and 400 yards.
